Electrical Installations and Solar Rural Electrification

Solarec, as an electrical company with well-trained engineers and technicians within its fold, has undertaken many installations ranging from small-scale domestic systems to large-scale installations in rural electrification networks such as the Kwalkwalawa village electrification project in Sokoto State, and several villages in Nasarawa state including Gidan Buba, Kwarra, Angwan Zaria, Udeni Gida, etc

Street Lighting

Street lighting has come to play an important role in urban towns serving both as a means of improving the outlook of such towns and even more importantly, providing additional security at night.  Solarec has played an active role in street lighting projects in several major cities in Nigeria.  The company manufactures automatic controllers, which not only control streetlights but also protect the installations from overvoltages, fluctuations, etc.  A number of these controllers are in use in such towns as Kaduna, Kano, and Bauchi.  Recently, Solarec introduced solar powered street lighting systems for areas that may not be connected to the national grid.  These systems have been successfully installed and commissioned in Kwalkwalawa village of Sokoto state and in a number of villages in Nasarawa State.

Rural Water Supply

The need for clean, safe water for people, irrigation and livestock is universal, equally affecting populations large and small, rural and urban.  However, the major obstacle in providing portable water in the rural areas is the absence of a reliable energy source to  use in pumping the water.  Attempts at using diesel generators have largely failed due to the problems associated with such generators.

Solar powered water pumping systems are specially designed to operate in areas where no reliable electricity supply is available.  They are economical requiring no running expenses.

The Solarec solar powered pumping system consists of:

The Solar Array: which converts the radiant energy in sunlight into electricity

The Inverter: which conditions the electricity and protects the pump from most faults.

The Submersible Pump:  which is installed in the borehole and pumps water to a surface tank.

A typical community solar water pumping system will have a 1.5Kw solar array and supplies up to 5000 gallons of water per day.  Solar pumping systems can raise water from depths of up to 100m. In communities where there is an existing borehole equipped with a diesel pumping system, conversion to solar is possible.  We have carried out such conversions in Bebbende and Agirwa, Fune LGA, Yobe State as well as in Burum-Burum, Tudun Wada LGA, Kano State; Takuda, Ahoto and Fagam in Jigawa State; to mention a few.

Medical Refrigeration

The  provision of reliable refrigeration for vaccines is a critical factor in the implementation of effective primary healthcare in the rural areas.  Petrol and diesel powered systems continually face problems in obtaining fuel, spare parts and regular servicing, which seriously jeopardise rural health programmes.  Using solar powered refrigeration, these problems are overcome.  By harnessing the free and abundant energy from the sun, the solar refrigeration system requires no fuel and only minimal maintenance, offering a high degree of reliability in even the most rural areas.

A typical solar refrigerator consists of :

   The Solar Array

   The Storage Battery

   The Solar Refrigerator

In 1998, we installed solar vaccine refrigerators in 100 villages spanning 20 states in the country under the PTF NPI support programme.
